I've been a TA for several years and grading student essay questions has become quite an eyesore.
It's hard to distinguish words from their chicken scratches. Do they even teach handwriting in elementary schools anymore?
And don't even get me started on the spelling/grammatical errors. It's as if they can't write properly without word processors correcting their innumerable mistakes.
Most of the students are clearly bright and intelligent with a great thirst for knowledge. But their subpar writing detracts from the overall quality of their thoughts/opinions.
There was an article in the Daily Trojan a few months ago from an undergraduate perspective arguing that they shouldn’t be penalized for their handwriting skills. Perhaps the time has come to just do away with handwritten responses altogether and move towards a printed/typed medium as the current generation is more comfortable with typing anyway. This will make it a lot easier for both the writers and readers.
Any thoughts from fellow TAs/graders?
